What does expat life in Singapore mean to you?

Being an expat can be exciting, but also a little daunting. In our many conversations with fellow Expatriates some questions come up again and again. We have listed below the 7 most common questions we are asked:

  1. Is property from back home a sensible investment, and if so
  • How will I finance my purchase?
  • Do the tax implications of being an overseas/foreign investor outweigh the benefits of property ownership for my nationality?

  1. What about Retirement savings?
  • Can I continue to contribute to my home country’s Pension plans, and if so should I do so?
  • How can I keep track of the value of my Retirement plans and get local advice on what to do?
  • Will pooling my various funds into a single plan save me money?
  • Will I face additional tax now that I am an expat?

  1. How can I maximise the value of my savings, should I
  • Take advantage of tax advantaged plans not available in my home country?
  • Send my money home to save in funds taxed there?
  • Consider investing in other currencies or stick to the Singapore dollar

  1. What should I do about Life Insurance, is it better to
  • Keep my insurance in my home country and if I do will I still be covered?
  • Pay for insurance through my Pensions or use them purely for retirement savings?
  • Is there a difference between expat or local Singaporean insurance?

  1. I have a will back home, is this enough or should I have a will in Singapore?

  1. What will happen to my children if something happens to me, I need to know
  • Will they be able to stay at their school in Singapore?
  • Will my partner be able to stay in Singapore?
  • What happens until their Guardian can come to Singapore to look after them?

  1. If I need to send money home, what is the best and most cost-effective way to do so?

These questions are just some of the issues faced by Expats here in Singapore.
